A Legacy of Renowned Trees—Plum Varieties Centered Around the Kureha Weeping Plum

Suzuka Forest Garden cultivates around 30 varieties of plum trees, including both weeping and upright types, with a total of approximately 200 trees. The garden’s most iconic presence is the elegant “Kureha Weeping Plum.” Its delicate, light pink medium-sized blossoms bloom beautifully, and at full bloom, the edges of the petals turn white, creating a striking appearance. The best viewing period is around early March.
Within the garden stand “Ten no Ryu” and “Chi no Ryu,” trees over 100 years old that belong to the lineage of the Kureha weeping plum, considered among the oldest of their kind in Japan. Their powerful branches and abundant blossoms create a breathtaking landscape that signals the arrival of spring.

The garden also features rare varieties such as Shirataki Weeping Plum, Naniwa Weeping Plum, and Fuji Botan Weeping Plum. By comparing the shapes, layering, and blooming patterns of their petals, visitors can appreciate the depth and diversity of plum blossoms.
The graceful “weeping” forms of these trees are not created by nature alone. Skilled artisans carefully guide the branches and perform precise pruning, shaping elegant curves that bring out the full beauty of each variety.
Because each variety blooms at a different time, early- and late-blooming trees coexist throughout the garden, allowing visitors to enjoy the plum season over an extended period. In particular, when the Kureha weeping plum reaches full bloom, the gradual blooming of Shirataki and Naniwa varieties creates a stunning gradient of colors—a truly moving prelude to spring.
In this way, Suzuka Forest Garden brings together the individuality of each variety, refined cultivation techniques, and thoughtful landscape design to create not just a plum grove, but a living work of art.
Plum Blossoms Floating in the Dark—A Fantastical Night Illumination

During the blooming season, Suzuka Forest Garden offers nighttime illumination, revealing a mystical world entirely different from the daytime scenery.

The illumination highlights the trees from below, while skillfully incorporating natural elements. Reflections in water surfaces create mesmerizing mirror-like scenes, while mist effects add depth and atmosphere. The interplay of light and shadow, combined with drifting mist, creates a dreamlike landscape as if the blossoms were floating above a sea of clouds.

Timing your visit can further enhance the experience. The “magic hour” from just before sunset to shortly after illumination begins is considered the most beautiful, as daylight and artificial light blend together. A one-day pass is available, allowing visitors to enjoy both daytime and nighttime views at a relaxed pace.
Branches emerging from the darkness, shadows cast by delicate petals, and reflections shimmering on the water—all combine to transform the garden into a “stage of night,” revealing an entirely new expression of beauty.
A Sea of Plum Blossoms from the Viewing Deck—A Landscape in Harmony with the Suzuka Mountains

One of the most popular viewpoints in the garden is the observation deck. From here, visitors can overlook the entire garden, where pink weeping plums spread out like a sea of blossoms, harmonizing with the majestic Suzuka Mountains in the background. On clear days, distant peaks such as Mount Shaka can also be seen.
The scenery from the deck changes dramatically throughout the day. From morning to midday, natural light enhances the vivid contrast between the blossoms and greenery, making it a favorite spot for photographers. In the afternoon, angled sunlight adds depth and dimension, while at night, the illuminated landscape transforms into a magical spectacle.
The observation deck is easily accessible, naturally guiding visitors along the garden paths. Visiting early in the morning is especially recommended, when the crisp air and the gentle fragrance of plum blossoms create a refreshing atmosphere. The view resembles waves of pink flowing toward the mountain foothills, a masterpiece of landscape design that incorporates the surrounding mountains as “borrowed scenery.”
Crane and Turtle Islands—A Garden of Symbolic Beauty

Within Suzuka Forest Garden, traditional Japanese garden elements such as Crane Island, Turtle Island, and Mount Horai reflect classical design aesthetics. These symbolic stone arrangements are paired with weeping plum trees, showcasing the refined artistic vision of garden design.
The motifs of crane and turtle have long symbolized longevity and good fortune in Japan. Decorating these symbolic forms with blooming plum blossoms expresses renewal and auspicious beginnings in spring. The interplay between the graceful branches, solid stone forms, and carefully balanced space creates a harmonious blend of movement and stillness.

Near the entrance, the iconic Kureha weeping plums named “Ten no Ryu” and “Chi no Ryu” greet visitors, serving as enduring symbols of the garden. Together with the Crane and Turtle Islands, these elements form a cohesive landscape that embodies the poetic beauty of spring in Japan.
On mornings with mist or fog effects, the islands appear veiled in haze, creating an even deeper and more mysterious atmosphere. This area is not just a place to admire plum blossoms, but a space to appreciate the quiet dialogue between flowers, stone, and space. Each visit reveals new layers of beauty, offering an intellectually and emotionally enriching experience.
