【Yunoyama Onsen】Soak in the Blissful Hot Springs Surrounded by Rich Nature

Yunoyama Onsen, discovered in 718, is an ancient hot spring located at the eastern foot of Mount Gozaisho, the highest peak in the northern part of Mie Prefecture. The area is known for its rich and diverse seasonal landscapes.

After being devastated in the burning of Sanga Temple during Oda Nobunaga's invasion of Ise, the hot spring was revived as a hot spring inn in the late 1600s. During the Seinan War in 1877, the hot spring served as a temporary recuperation facility for wounded soldiers, and it gradually regained its vitality.

Despite its ups and downs since its discovery, Yunoyama Onsen has continued to this day and is also known as Deer Hot Spring. There are now about 10 hotels and ryokan inns, and facilities that can be used for day trips to the hot springs are also available. The area has not become an entertainment district and is popular for family outings and as a base for recreational and leisure activities in the Suzuka mountain range.

The Legend of Yunoyama Onsen, also known as Deer Hot Spring

湯の山温泉 鹿の湯

Once upon a time, a woodcutter spotted a deer healing its injured leg in a valley stream. The deer seemed to be enjoying itself when a hunter appeared, aiming to kill the deer. The woodcutter raised his voice to scare the deer away and save it. Later, the deer visited the woodcutter and told him about the valley stream where the healing hot spring water emerged. The story spread quickly to distant villages and towns.

In 1950, Yunoyama Onsen gained nationwide recognition as the venue for a mountain climbing competition during the Aichi National Athletic Meet. In 1959, the opening of the Gozaisho Ropeway created an explosion in the popularity of the area.

The Healing Effects of Yunoyama Onsen, Beneficial for Deer, Wounded Soldiers, and Modern People Alike

Yunoyama Onsen is said to be effective for gastrointestinal diseases, neuralgia, and injuries, as well as being popular among women as a secret tool for beautiful skin.

The spring is an alkaline radium hot spring (alkaline radioactive spring). The human body is made up of weak alkaline components, and it becomes acidic when fatigued. Alkaline hot springs are not only gentle on the skin but also help restore the body to its weak alkaline state.

Hearing the word “radioactive” may make one feel apprehensive, but it is believed to be beneficial for gout, rheumatoid arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis. Radiation is absorbed into the body through bathing or drinking, but it is quickly excreted. The hormesis effect refers to the process of subjecting the body to a small amount of radiation, which is said to boost immunity. However, be careful not to soak for too long.

Basically, the spring water is odorless, colorless, and transparent, so one might assume that it is not very stimulating. However, among the many hot springs, this one has a relatively strong effect. Becoming overheated in the hot spring may cause headaches, dizziness, and other physical discomforts, so please warm your body slowly while taking breaks. But if you become overheated one time, it does not mean that the spring water is unsuitable for your body.

As with any hot spring, your body’s condition and familiarity with the water can vary, so please enjoy this radioactive spring without being too concerned.

Savor Exquisite Cuisine Made with Carefully Selected Ingredients in the Midst of Nature

The rich natural surroundings make it an ideal place to enjoy game dishes. Wild boar, a local favorite in the area, is light in flavor and without any unpleasant gamey taste, and it becomes more delicious the longer it is simmered in a hot pot. Duck dishes are also popular for their rich and succulent fat.

For river fish, it is recommended to enjoy the seasonal varieties simply grilled with salt. Additionally, there are restaurants that serve eel, which is expertly prepared to maximize the natural flavor and eliminate any fishy smell, resulting in a fluffy and delicate texture. The crispy, freshly grilled texture is irresistible. Once you taste the ultimate freshness and made-to-order deliciousness, you’ll undoubtedly be hooked.

Make a Detour to Seasonal Attractions at Gozaisho and Enjoy a Luxurious Holiday

御在所ロープウェイ

The area around Yunoyama Onsen is filled with tourist attractions. The Gozaisho Ropeway, which attracts visitors from other prefectures, is a charming attraction that can be enjoyed in any season. The journey from the 800-meter-high base station to the 1,400-meter-high summit station covers a one-way distance of 2,549 meters and takes about 15 minutes. With departures every minute, it rarely gets crowded, and pets are allowed on board if they are in a carrying case, which is a nice feature.

In spring, when the seasons change earlier than on the plains, fresh green leaves sprout, and numerous flowers, including the Akayashio azalea, the representative flower of Mount Gozaisho, bloom from the base of the mountain. In summer, the cool and refreshing contrast between the blue sky and green mountains offers a sense of openness. In autumn, the foliage begins to change at the summit around October and descends to Yunoyama Onsen over a month. The interwoven colors of red, yellow, and green create an unforgettable beauty that remains in everyone’s heart. Don’t miss the snow-white winter landscape either. If weather conditions are right, you can see frost-covered trees, a natural art form.

At the summit, you can also enjoy the popular Gozaisho Curry Udon, made with chewy Ise Udon noodles. Create memories with the ever-changing seasonal scenery and aerial walks while gazing at the spectacular views of the Southern Alps, along with the limited gourmet dishes.

Another must-visit spot is Aquaignis. The name means “fire and water,” and it is a complex hot spring resort with a focus on relaxation and food. The enchanting cuisine is prepared by skilled artisans who pay attention to the ingredients, and the unique space is created by a diverse group of creators, including artists and designers.
