【Togakushi Shrine 】A Sacred Pilgrimage Through Myth and Majestic Cedar Forests

Nestled at the foot of the sacred Mount Togakushi, Togakushi Shrine is a historic shrine complex consisting of five shrines: Okusha (Upper Shrine), Kuzuryusha, Chusha (Middle Shrine), Hinomikosha, and Hokosha.

Among the highlights, the approach to Okusha Shrine is particularly unforgettable. Beyond the Zuishinmon Gate, a magnificent avenue of towering cedar trees unfolds before you. Many of these cedars are over 400 years old, creating an atmosphere of remarkable serenity and grandeur.

The Origins of Togakushi Faith, Where the Legend of Amano-Iwato Lives On

The key to understanding the origins of Togakushi Shrine lies in the myth of Amano-Iwato, the opening of the Heavenly Rock Cave. When Amaterasu Omikami hid herself inside the cave and the world was plunged into darkness, the gods used their wisdom, sacred dance, and ritual prayers to open the cave and restore light. Togakushi enshrines the deities who played important roles in that divine event.

According to legend, the rock door that was thrown away at that time fell to earth and became present-day Mount Togakushi. With its rugged cliffs and mythic atmosphere, this land is truly a sacred place of mountain worship. From the central Chusha Shrine to the Okusha Shrine deep in the mountains, and Kuzuryusha Shrine dedicated to the water deity, the deeper you walk, the more strongly the presence of nature reveals the essence of Togakushi.

There is no fixed order for visiting the five shrines. What matters most is the kind of time you wish to spend. If you want to immerse yourself in silence, visit in the morning mist. If you want to savor the scenery, take your time. In Togakushi, the act of worship is the journey itself, and with every step, the landscape of myth seems to quietly sink into the heart of each visitor.

The Spirit of the Shikinen Grand Festival, Passed Down Every Six Years in the Years of the Ox and Sheep

One of the most important milestones in the history of Togakushi Shrine is the Shikinen Grand Festival, held once every six years in the years of the Ox and Sheep. This sacred event is a rare opportunity to renew the bonds of faith that have continued for more than 2,000 years and to reaffirm the identity of Togakushi as a holy place.

In the current Shikinen Grand Festival, a ritual is held in which the deity of Hokosha Shrine travels to Chusha Shrine to meet the father deity enshrined there. This procession symbolizes a return to the origin: “Togakushi began at Okusha.” Both the deities and the people move from the village toward the foot of Mount Togakushi. This scene is the spiritual foundation of the festival and an enduring image of faith that remains unchanged through the ages.

For visitors, the Shikinen Grand Festival is less a flashy celebration than a time to physically sense the accumulation of thousands of years of devotion. Once you understand this story, each shrine visited during the Five-Shrine Pilgrimage connects into one continuous narrative, and all of Togakushi emerges as a vast space of prayer. If you carry this history in your heart before or after your journey, the cedar-lined approaches and shrine buildings will speak to you with deeper meaning than ever before.

The Freedom to Choose Your Route Makes the Five-Shrine Pilgrimage Even More Meaningful

The classic way to worship at Togakushi Shrine is the “Five-Shrine Pilgrimage,” visiting Okusha, Chusha, Hokosha, Kuzuryusha, and Hinomikosha shrines.

There is no official order for visiting them, so you can plan your route freely according to your schedule. However, if you connect all five shrines on foot, you should allow roughly half a day. It is, in a sense, a small trek through sacred ground, so comfortable walking shoes and a relaxed schedule are essential.

The key points to check when planning your visit are the reception hours for shrine offices and goshuin, as well as winter closure periods. In general, shrine offices are open from around 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., but Okusha is closed from January 7 until late April. Since goshuin arrangements also change in winter, it is best to confirm seasonal conditions in advance.

For example, it takes about 30 minutes on foot from Chusha to the entrance of the Okusha approach, and then another 40 minutes to reach Okusha itself, where cars cannot enter. This walking time becomes a gradual transition into the sacred realm. By the time you finish visiting all five shrines, you may realize that the entire land of Togakushi is one vast shrine. That is the true beauty of the Five-Shrine Pilgrimage.

Echoes of the Heian Period—Daidaikagura and the Living Form of Prayer

Among the rituals of Togakushi Shrine, the highest sacred performance offered to the gods is “Daidaikagura,” designated as an Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Nagano Prefecture. It has been strictly passed down through generations by priestly families who have protected this land, along with their descendants.

The kagura consists of ten dances in total. The performances range from prayers to ward off misfortune and bring abundant harvests to reenactments of the “Opening of Amano-Iwato,” the origin of Togakushi itself. Among them, the shrine maiden dance preserves traces of the former exclusion of women from the sacred mountain, while the earnest performances by local schoolgirls speak to the depth of faith in the community.

Performed around 70 times a year as sacred music and dance offered to carry worshippers’ prayers to the gods, this ritual is not entertainment for spectators but a living act of worship. Visitors may observe freely, but photography, recording, and entering or leaving midway should be avoided. Spending an hour and a half to two hours in this space of prayer becomes more than “watching”—it is an experience of being present with the pure spiritual power of Togakushi faith.
