Exquisite Cuisine Made from Fresh, Seasonal Seafood

Himakajima’s greatest allure lies in its abundant seafood. The island is renowned for its rich marine resources, thanks to the nutrient-filled fresh water flowing from the Yahagi River and the complex ocean currents. The cuisine highlights the natural flavors of the fresh seafood, creating dishes that are truly unforgettable.
The island’s specialty, octopus, is available year-round and plays a starring role in many dishes. Himakajima octopus is known for its natural sweetness and tender texture that remains soft even when boiled. From boiled whole octopus (tako maruyude) to sashimi, karaage, octopus shabu-shabu, and vinegar-marinated octopus, visitors can enjoy a full course of octopus delicacies.
Additionally, the island offers Chita Beef, a premium Japanese beef raised on the Chita Peninsula, throughout the year. Seasonal seafood options include white clams, Japanese pen shells, large clams, and mantis shrimp in spring; conger eel, sea urchin, turban shells, and tiger prawns in summer; red sea bream, blue crabs, and Ise lobsters in autumn; and tiger blowfish in winter.
Enjoy a Variety of Activities

While summer swimming is a must, Himakajima also offers nature programs from spring to autumn, including dolphin encounters and octopus catching, for unique island experiences. Year-round activities like cycling, sightseeing, and visiting power spots are also popular.
For sightseeing, the recommended walking route includes the island’s famous octopus monument, the unique Tako Police Station featured in the media, the island’s single traffic light, and scenic spots offering views of nearby Shinojima and Tsukumi Islands. This route provides the perfect way to enjoy all the highlights of Himakajima.

For those seeking spiritual refreshment, the power spot tour route takes visitors to the island’s temples and shrines, including the famous Anrakuji Temple for matchmaking, Donkaiin Temple for fertility and child-rearing, and Choshinji Temple for safe childbirth. Whether you’re creating lasting memories or seeking a spiritual recharge, the island offers plenty of ways to rejuvenate your heart and soul.

Indulge in Premium Blowfish Cuisine at Affordable Prices During Winter

Although Himakajima is famous for octopus, its blowfish dishes are equally noteworthy! Aichi Prefecture boasts one of Japan’s highest catches of natural tiger blowfish, with Mikawa Bay, Ise Bay, and Enshu Nada near the island being prime fishing grounds. For over 100 years, the island has practiced longline fishing, carefully catching blowfish one by one without harming them.
Blowfish season runs from October to March, during which you can enjoy a full course of dishes like thinly sliced blowfish sashimi (tessa), blowfish hot pot (tecchiri), deep-fried blowfish, and blowfish porridge at local inns and guesthouses—all at reasonable prices!
