【Shiga Prefectural Azuchi Castle Archaeological Museum】Discover the Romance of the Sengoku Era and the Legacy of Nobunaga

Located in Omihachiman City, Shiga Prefecture, the Shiga Prefectural Azuchi Castle Archaeological Museum focuses on the history of Oda Nobunaga, the builder of Azuchi Castle, as well as the broader history of Japanese castles.
Its distinctive architecture stands out even from a distance. The design was inspired by the idea: “If Nobunaga himself had built a museum, this is what it might have looked like.” The structure features a Romanesque style reminiscent of a medieval European monastery.
The museum’s symbol is its observation tower, which resembles a Western-style helmet. Beneath the tower lies an impressive four-story atrium space, said to be inspired by the interior of Azuchi Castle, offering visitors a powerful and immersive experience.
Reopened in March 2025 after a major renovation, the museum has been reborn as a one-of-a-kind institution dedicated to Azuchi Castle, Nobunaga, and the Sengoku period. The dynamic theater room, in particular, allows visitors to vividly imagine the grandeur of Azuchi Castle.

Step into Azuchi Castle: Experience the Vision of Missionary Valignano

Reopened in March 2025 after a complete renovation, the First Permanent Exhibition Room has been transformed from a traditional gallery into a spacious, state-of-the-art theater room.

The featured 15-minute film, titled “Oda Nobunaga and Azuchi Castle: The Unifier’s Fortress Through the Eyes of Missionary Valignano,” features Nobunaga himself narrating the true purpose behind the construction of his legendary stronghold.

The highlight is the immersive 5-screen cinematic experience. The high-definition CG visuals bring the “Phantom Castle” of Azuchi to life with unprecedented scale and realism—a truly breathtaking spectacle.

The reconstructed main keep (Tenshu) is a must-see, meticulously recreated using high-definition CG based on 85 years of archaeological excavations and research conducted since the early Showa era.

The presentation also dives deep into Nobunaga’s urban planning and political ambitions, answering the fundamental question: “Why was this castle built on this specific site?”

Discover the Evolution of Japanese Castles and the Legacy of Oda Nobunaga

The Second Permanent Exhibition Room focuses on the history of Japanese castle architecture, the findings from the Azuchi Castle excavations, and the life of its lord, Oda Nobunaga.

During the Sengoku period (15th–16th centuries), castles evolved from temporary mountain forts into massive architectural feats. Azuchi Castle was the first to perfect the “Early Modern Castle” style, featuring sophisticated stone walls, plastered ramparts, tiled roofs, and a magnificent central keep.

This section is perfect for those curious about how castles were built, the different types of fortresses across Japan, and what life was like before Azuchi set the new standard.

The gallery features topographical models of Azuchi Castle, detailed reconstructions of the Ote-michi (main approach), and various models of stone walls. Visitors can also view authentic artifacts, portraits of famous warlords, and historical documents. For a hands-on experience, you can even try holding a replica of a long spear used in battle.

Preserving History: Shiga’s Cultural Heritage and Restoration Efforts

At the heart of the museum lies a courtyard reminiscent of a medieval European garden. From the surrounding corridors, visitors can observe experts as they restore, organize, and research artifacts excavated from various archaeological sites within the prefecture.

The walls also display preserved geological sections of shell mounds (kaizuka) excavated from the Awazu Lacustrine Site in Otsu City.

By seeing not just the finished exhibits but the human effort involved in bringing them to light, the lives and history of ancient people will feel much more tangible.

The courtyard’s symmetrical greenery and the view looking up toward the museum’s observation tower make it a highly popular spot for photography.

Your Base for Historical Exploration and Hiking

The area surrounding the museum is known as “Omi Fudoki-no-oka,” a scenic landscape dotted with historic buildings relocated from famous archaeological sites.

A sprawling lawn surrounds the building, providing a perfect spot to relax after your tour. We highly recommend taking the knowledge you’ve gained at the museum and heading out to the actual Azuchi Castle ruins.

The walk from the museum to the ruins takes about 10 minutes. Standing on the site where Nobunaga once dreamed of unifying Japan and looking out over the landscape is a truly special experience—you’ll feel like the legendary lord himself.

For those with more stamina, we recommend hiking to the Kannonji Castle ruins. Once the stronghold of the Sasaki-Rokkaku clan, the protectors of Omi Province, this massive mountain fortress predates Azuchi Castle and covers the slopes of Mt. Kinasa.

In the central areas, such as the former Honmaru (inner bailey), you can still see the original stone walls and building foundation stones, offering a raw glimpse into medieval history.
