Through animations, immersive dioramas, and carefully selected excavated artifacts, the museum presents Yayoi-period life and culture in an engaging, easy-to-understand, and highly experiential way—its greatest appeal.
Outdoors, visitors can explore reconstructed elements of a Yayoi village, including pit dwellings, raised-floor granaries, moats, and rice paddies. These hands-on spaces are designed to let visitors physically experience everyday life and craftsmanship from the Yayoi period.
Combining rich exhibitions with interactive learning, the museum goes beyond being simply a place to study history. It is highly recommended not only for history enthusiasts, but also for families creating memories together and for school field trips—an inspiring destination offering both education and discovery.

Unraveling One of the Largest Yayoi Settlements in the Tokai Region

The Asahi Site was a large settlement continuously inhabited from the early Yayoi period through the early Kofun period (approximately the 6th century BCE to the 4th century CE). It is estimated to have stretched about 1.4 km east–west and 0.8 km north–south.
Archaeological excavations have uncovered an exceptionally rich variety of remains and artifacts, including defensive structures such as moats and sharpened wooden stakes, as well as evidence of daily life such as fish traps, wooden farming tools, bronze bells (dotaku), beads, and bone and antler objects linked to ritual and trade. Together, these discoveries provide unparalleled insight into the lives, beliefs, technologies, and extensive trade networks of Yayoi people.
The settlement clearly shows distinct residential and burial zones, along with sophisticated defensive systems, demonstrating advanced planning and social organization. For these reasons, the Asahi Site is regarded as one of the most important archaeological sites for understanding Yayoi culture in this region.
Within the grounds lies the Kaigarayama Shell Midden, believed to be one of the earliest areas of permanent settlement within the Asahi site complex. Rich shell layers, human remains, pottery, and numerous artifacts have been excavated here, revealing the deep historical roots of the site. In 1971, approximately 10,169 square meters of the surrounding area were designated a National Historic Site, underscoring its exceptional significance.
Through a combination of detailed indoor exhibitions and outdoor reconstructions, the museum enables visitors not only to learn about the Asahi Site intellectually, but also to physically sense the scale of the settlement and the rhythms of Yayoi life.
Recreating a Yayoi Village Through Dioramas and Artifacts

he museum’s core exhibitions are housed in Permanent Exhibition Room 1 and Permanent Exhibition Room 2, where important cultural artifacts, dioramas, and multimedia displays vividly introduce Yayoi-period life.
The highlight of Exhibition Room 1 is the expansive Asahi Site Location Diorama, depicting the settlement at its peak. Visitors can intuitively grasp the village layout, the daily activities of its inhabitants, and the surrounding landscape. Using binocular viewers and synchronized audio narration, guests are immersed in an experience that feels as if they have stepped directly into the Yayoi era.

Exhibition Room 2 focuses on excavated artifacts designated as Important Cultural Properties, displayed by theme—tools, ornamentation, ritual practices, and metalwork. From agricultural implements to ceremonial items, the exhibits carefully explain the advanced craftsmanship, beliefs, and daily lives of the Yayoi people. Special exhibition galleries also host rotating thematic displays, offering new perspectives and deeper learning with each visit.
Beauty and Craftsmanship Left by Yayoi Artisans

At the heart of the museum’s collection are the remarkable Yayoi-period artifacts uncovered through excavation.
In September 2012, 2,028 items from the Asahi Site were designated as Important Cultural Properties, representing the museum’s most valuable holdings. These include pottery, wooden objects, stone tools, glass beads, metal items, and bone, antler, and shell artifacts. Together, they provide critical evidence for understanding livelihoods, production, distribution, and spiritual life in Yayoi society.

Outside the museum lies the reconstructed “Experiential Yayoi Village.” This immersive area faithfully recreates pit dwellings, raised-floor storehouses, experimental rice paddies, and square moated burial mounds. Visitors can walk freely through the village, sensing the atmosphere and daily rhythms of a Yayoi settlement.

Hands-on programs include rice planting and harvesting using stone tools, offering a firsthand understanding of Yayoi agriculture. Seasonal events feature rare experiences such as mock archaeological excavations at reconstructed burial sites, as well as photo opportunities in Yayoi-style clothing inside recreated dwellings.

Inside the museum, the Kids Archaeology Lab and hands-on learning rooms regularly host workshops such as magatama bead-making, pottery creation, and traditional fire-making. These programs are open to participants of all ages.

Rather than simply viewing exhibits, visitors are invited to step into history and engage all five senses. The Experiential Yayoi Village offers a truly unique and moving way to encounter the Yayoi period—an unforgettable journey into Japan’s ancient past.
