【Handa Red Brick Building】 A Landmark of the Chita Peninsula Filled with History and Romance

The Handa Red Brick Building was established in 1898 as a factory for producing Kabuto Beer. The architect, Yorinaka Tsumaki, was one of the three great masters of architecture during the Meiji era. He also designed iconic structures such as the Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse and the decorative elements of Nihonbashi.

This structure is one of the largest brick buildings from the Meiji era in Japan and is an exceptionally rare example of a beer factory from that time. Recognized as a significant cultural asset, it is registered as a National Tangible Cultural Property and a Modern Industrial Heritage.

Inside the building, you will find a permanent exhibition room introducing the history of the red brick building and Kabuto Beer, a restaurant offering delicious food and the revived Kabuto Beer, and a shop with souvenirs and local products from Handa and the Chita region.

Experience the History and Passion of Pioneers Who Aspired to Create Authentic German Beer

The Handa Red Brick Building is a rare structure, featuring unique architectural elements like hollow-core walls and multi-arched floors designed to maintain stable temperatures and humidity for beer production.

In the permanent exhibition room, visitors can learn about the building and the history of Kabuto Beer through models, videos, and historical photographs.

Kabuto Beer, born in Handa, was created during the Meiji era with the aim of producing authentic German beer. It boldly challenged Japan’s four major beer manufacturers at the time. In 1900, it won a gold medal at the Paris Expo. However, the economic downturn after the Russo-Japanese War led to significant changes in the beer industry. Kabuto Beer went through several name changes and eventually ceased production during World War II, becoming a “phantom beer” of its time.

In 2005, Kabuto Beer was revived with a faithful recreation of its original Meiji-era recipe. This limited-edition release of 3,000 bottles marked its return after nearly half a century. In 2016, the Taisho-era version of Kabuto Beer was successfully revived, and today, you can enjoy two varieties of this historic beer.
