Step Inside a Trick-Filled Mansion and Experience the Life of a Ninja

For ninja, having their true identity discovered was equivalent to losing their lives. To avoid this, they lived outwardly as ordinary farmers or townspeople, while secretly incorporating ingenious mechanisms into the structure of their homes.

The “Karakuri Koga Mansion,” relocated to Koka Ninja Village, was originally the residence of the Fujibayashi family, descendants of real Koga ninja. At first glance, it appears to be a simple traditional farmhouse, but inside it conceals numerous clever devices.

Weapons were hidden in unexpected places in preparation for enemy intrusion, and secret escape routes were built to allow a swift disappearance in times of danger.

There were also features such as retractable staircases that could be pulled up and sealed off, and hidden doors designed to confuse intruders—turning everyday living spaces into defensive structures. These surviving trick houses are valuable cultural assets that allow visitors to experience the ingenuity and lifestyle of ninja firsthand.

A Treasure Trove of Koga Ninja Techniques and Wisdom

The Koka Ninja Museum was established in 1983 to share the history and reality of ninja in Koka, believed to be one of their birthplaces. Set within the rich natural surroundings of the Suzuka Mountains, the building itself holds cultural value.

Within the exhibition hall, a thatched-roof house associated with Koga ninja has been relocated and preserved. Visitors can experience both the daily life of the time and the world of ninja simultaneously.

The museum displays a wide range of ninja-related tools and weapons, including the “Bansenshukai,” one of the three great secret manuals of ninjutsu, shuriken used by different schools, water tools for underwater activities, and firearms utilizing gunpowder.

These are not merely weapons, but the culmination of ingenuity and adaptation that enabled ninja to survive in harsh conditions and carry out their missions. As a place where visitors can trace the footsteps of the Koga ninja and encounter their unique techniques and philosophies, the museum continues to captivate many.

Challenge the Techniques of Koga Ninja—A Full Sensory Experience

One of the biggest attractions of Koka Ninja Village is the “Ninja Training Grounds,” where visitors can actively participate in physical challenges. There are nine different activities inspired by traditional ninja training.

Activities include “Stone Wall Climbing,” “Wall Jumping,” “Side Wall Walking,” “Wall Traversing,” and balance-based challenges such as “Tightrope Walking” and “Single Beam Crossing.” There are also physical tests like “Slope Climbing,” as well as unique experiences like “Well Escape” and “Water Spider Walking,” recreating the skills of ninja moving across water.

Another popular attraction is the “Shuriken Dojo,” where visitors can throw real metal shuriken. The weight and feel provide a realistic sense of tension. While it may look simple, hitting the target accurately requires skill in angle and force, making it both challenging and rewarding.

With guidance from staff, you can improve your technique, and when you finally hit the target, a rush of exhilaration and accomplishment follows. It’s an addictive experience that anyone can enjoy, offering a true taste of the ninja world through both body and mind.

Dress Like a Ninja and Step into the Role!

If you’re going to take on ninja training, why not fully embrace the experience? At Koka Ninja Village, you can rent ninja costumes at the costume shop, with sizes available for both children and adults.

Once dressed in black ninja attire, you’ll instantly feel like a real ninja. You won’t have to worry about getting your clothes dirty, allowing you to focus entirely on your training. The immersive atmosphere enhances both the experience and photo opportunities.

Another unique cultural experience offered here is “Yakisugi Craft,” where the surface of cedar boards is charred to bring out the natural grain, creating a distinctive texture. Using these boards, you can make practical items such as key racks or wall hangings.

While easy enough for children to enjoy, the activity also has a depth that captivates adults. It makes for a memorable souvenir or even a decorative piece for your home. After the physical excitement of ninja training, this calm and creative experience offers a perfect balance—one of the unique charms of Koka Ninja Village.
