Reason for Left-Hand Traffic
The origin of left-hand traffic in Japan dates back to the Edo period, when feudal lords would ride horses through their territories. As they held their swords in their right hands, left-hand traffic was considered safer. Moreover, Japan was influenced by Western culture during the Meiji Restoration, and the fact that major Western countries at the time, such as the United Kingdom and France, drove on the left side contributed to this decision.
Did cars drive on the left or right side during the American occupation?
During the American occupation of Japan, from 1946 to 1952, right-hand traffic was temporarily adopted under the influence of the United States. However, during this period problems arose, such as increased traffic accidents and the fact that existing roads and vehicles were designed for left-hand traffic. Consequently, Japan returned to left-hand traffic in 1952.
