Popular as a summer retreat and autumn foliage spot

付知峡

In summer, Tsukechi Gorge is a popular destination for its cool temperatures, and it serves as a refreshing retreat. Many people visit the gorge to enjoy playing in the river and to see the waterfalls, which are rich in negative ions. Although there are well-maintained walking paths to various waterfalls, be cautious as some areas can be slippery, depending on the weather, and the trails have their fair share of ups and downs.

The gorge is also famous for its beautiful autumn foliage, which attracts many tourists. The best time to view the colorful leaves is from late October to early November. The contrast between the gorge’s shimmering blue river and the vibrant autumn leaves is simply breathtaking. Photographers and photography enthusiasts from all over Japan come to capture this stunning scenery. Why not experience the healing effects of the gorge’s rich and ever-changing natural beauty for yourself?

Refresh yourself in the clear blue water and abundant nature

There are numerous waterfalls in Tsukechi Gorge, and one must-see hiking course takes you to three of them. The loop takes about 40 minutes to complete, with well-maintained paths and rocky areas where you can rest along the way.

As you walk through the lush greenery, the first waterfall you’ll encounter is Kannon Waterfall. The water falls vertically into an emerald green pool, creating a picture-perfect spot. The view through the gap between large rocks resembles a door of Kannon, a Buddhist deity.

Next, after descending some stairs, you’ll find Fudo Waterfall, formed by the convergence of two streams. The dynamic waterfall, with its sharp, rugged rock formations and abundant water, is located within Fudo Park, which is also popular for its beautiful autumn foliage.

About 9 km north of Fudo Park, you’ll find Takadaru Waterfall, which can be viewed from the front. The water flowing in from Takadaru Valley sparkles brilliantly. Look for the rocks smoothed over time by the water, resembling a slide, just upstream of the waterfall.

Don’t forget to enjoy the suspension bridges as well. There are several suspension bridges along the Fudo Gorge Promenade, offering breathtaking views of the clear stream below. The scenery with the suspension bridges included adds a unique charm to your photos. Try incorporating them into your activities or as spice to your date.

Enjoy exquisite iwana (char) dishes in a secluded location beyond the suspension bridge

Iwana, or char, raised in the clean waters of the Tsukechi River, are delicious, whether grilled, fried, or served as sashimi. A restaurant specializing in iwana is Iwana no Sato Hazama. The shop is located in a secluded, nature-rich area, and to reach it, you must cross a suspension bridge, which adds a unique touch to the experience. The swaying bridge can only accommodate three adults at a time, which may be challenging for those with a fear of heights. If you’re feeling brave, take a moment to admire the stunning river view from the center of the bridge.

Iwana is a type of salmon that lives in the swift currents of remote mountain rivers. The iwana served at the restaurant are reportedly raised by the owner from when they were eggs, using the clear and cold water from the valley.

The classic menu item is a set meal that includes grilled iwana served on a stylish wooden plate. In addition to the grilled iwana, the meal comes with sashimi, mountain vegetable roast beef, and more, making it quite satisfying. The limited 30 set meals offered daily also include additional iwana sashimi and deep-fried iwana for added luxury. The crispy, fragrant skin and tender meat of the iwana lack the typical fishy flavor, making it easy to forget that it’s a river fish. After just one bite, you’ll understand why people go out of their way to visit.

The restaurant opens in March after the harsh winter and serves fresh mountain vegetable dishes, prepared every morning by the owner, during the Golden Week holidays. In autumn, you can enjoy rare mushroom dishes and even hear stories about mushroom hunting. Please note that the restaurant is closed from December to February due to snow falling about a month earlier than in the lowlands.

360-degree natural surroundings! Beginner-friendly campgrounds

宮島キャンプ場

Camping is a must-do activity when you’re surrounded by abundant nature, and there are several campgrounds in the Tsukechi Gorge area where you can enjoy the river and greenery. The Miyajima Campground, operated by the Tsukechi Town Tourist Association, is a rare campground connected by one of the few suspension bridges in the area. Located near the crystal-clear Tsukechi River, the morning and evening temperatures feel cooler and the air is refreshing compared to the city. During the day, families with children can enjoy trout fishing and playing in the river, followed by a barbecue for dinner! Meals under the clear sky, with the sound of the river in the background, are simply the best.

森林キャンプ場

After a day of fun, it’s also a good idea to reset at Kuraya Onsen Onpoi no Yu, which is about a 10-minute drive away. The Shinrin Campground, provided by the Tsukechi Town Forestry Association and which features the dynamic Tsukechi River running through the center of the grounds, is connected to the opposite bank by a bridge. One of the attractions of the campground is the open-air bath, and soaking in a tub in the great outdoors is truly exceptional! There are amenity cabins that can be reserved for groups of about 30 people, as well as smaller cabins without strict occupancy limits. All bungalows have their own water supply and stoves for added convenience. You can also enjoy campfires and fireworks along the river, making for a fully-equipped camping experience.

Take advantage of websites that compile campground information and experience a liberating camping life away from your daily routine, surrounded by nature.
