This section explores the long-standing connection between nature and human life in the Omi region, with historical artifacts displayed alongside a narrative told through the message of a \u201cdragon.\u201d The collection of wooden tools and fishing gear, a particular pride of Shiga Prefecture, showcases an abundance of actual historical items. The AR (Augmented Reality) section allows visitors to use tablets or smartphones to see Maruko-bune, the traditional sailing boats of the Edo period, as well as the surrounding landscapes of the lake from centuries ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This exhibition unravels the connections between human life, Lake Biwa, and its creatures through dioramas and real specimens. A farmhouse recreated to reflect life in the 1950s helps visitors experience the changes in daily life over time. The centerpiece of the exhibition, a collection of preserved specimens, showcases the incredible diversity and beauty of the creatures that inhabit Lake Biwa and its watershed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This exhibit features one of Japan\u2019s largest freshwater aquariums, displaying over 100 species of aquatic life, including nearly all native fish from Lake Biwa and the rivers of Shiga Prefecture. Additionally, it introduces various aspects of lake fish cuisine and food culture, providing a glimpse into how humans and aquatic life have coexisted over time. Visitors are invited to immerse themselves in the fascinating underwater world of Lake Biwa and its rivers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The “Life Experiment Workshop” features traditional houses recreated to offer insight into lifestyles closely connected with nature. Visitors can also explore the “Primeval Forest,” which reproduces a forest from approximately 1.8 million years ago when elephants roamed the region. Additionally, the “Jomon and Yayoi Forest” recreates the landscapes of Japan\u2019s prehistoric Jomon and Yayoi periods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To make the experience even more engaging for children, the museum provides the “Biwa Lake Museum Forest Exploration Map.” Using the map, young adventurers can search for interesting landmarks, such as “The World\u2019s Largest Growing Tree” and “A Jomon Period Favorite Snack!”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
